My husband and I want to give a BIG thanks to those who spent time
and effort working on the neighborhood zoning change with the City
Council. We were not able to participate in the work that went
into this but we were able to keep up to date through emails and
the website. I have had to spend longer hours at work over the
past 6 months so I have not had the time at home that I typically
do. Hopefully this will improve later this year.
We want to be sure those who did participate know how much they
are appreciated. We have helped on other things Guilford Hills has
done and we will again. Thanks for keeping everything going until
we can jump back in. We hope to be able to do the same for you, if
needed, in the future. JB (Overbrook Dr) |

THANKS! Your work to make this neighborhood one of the very best
in the city is so very appreciated. I could not attend any city
council meetings - but my e-mailing to council members and the
mayor were answered and this neighborhood's efforts were in my
prayers daily for weeks. JL (Surry) |

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! (Guilford Neighbor on the work with city
council) |

Michelle and others: Thank you so much! I was out of town so I
could not be there to support the effort. I appreciate everything
the team has done for our neighborhood. TT (Cornwallis Dr.) |

My name is Jo-Ann Peck and I live at 1103 Surry Dr. A kitten
showed-up to eat dinner with our cat last night and I wondered if
it was lost and belonged to someone in the Neighborhood. It's
about 8 weeks old, tabby with calico markings and crystal blue
eyes. Please call me @ 451-9501 if this is your kitten! JP |

Great jobs as always to
the Guilford Hills Committee members who are so dedicated. I have
lived here for almost 11 years and feel so very fortunate. I
would like to ask my neighbors to be more considerate of the
"outdoor cats". My nice natural and bedding areas have become one
huge litter box. I take time and some expense in keeping this up.
Please ask the neighbors to respect others by not allowing their
cats to roam. JCG |

We just moved to Fernwood Drive this past weekend, and I was so
amazed at the amount of people that have welcomed us to the
neighborhood. Our neighbors told me about the website and I think
it is a terrific idea to keep this community informed and together
on what is going on around us. So far we love it here and I will
continue to check the website, and we are looking forward to
Christmas, as I have heard about all the beautiful lights. I would
like to volunteer for some of the things that are going on in the
neighborhood, again thanks to all those who have welcomed us. CD |

I'm sorry...but this morning I was disgusted...at the intersection
of Cornwallis and Benjamin there is so much trash! I know it's not
us but it just makes me so mad that people do that...can we do
anything to help this and clean it up? Is it a city issue or can
we as a group clean up our neighborhood? I'll be glad to walk on
weekends and pick up trash with others!...It's not just that
intersection, it's really all up and down Benjamin on our side!
I'm sorry, I just care about where I live and to see that, it's
ridiculous and pathetic of people to do such a thing! LJ |

Thank you so much for all your hard work in keeping us up-to-date
in the neighborhood. We really appreciate all the info on recent
crimes, etc. Again, thank you for all you do. AJ |

I would love to help out on a committee at some point and time. I
would like to thank all of you that are doing such a marvelous
job. You are making a big difference!!! J |

My fiancé and I LOVE the neighborhood and are looking to buy or
rent a home in the near future (end of summer). We are getting
married in Nov., but have decided to try to find something before
then and allow my fiancé to live in it until we get married. If
any of you are thinking of selling your house or renting your
house in the near future please give us a shout. We have looked at
several, but have been a little late on the draw! His uncle and
father were raised in that neighborhood and his uncle still lives
there!! We are looking for under 125,000, but are VERY
interested!! Please keep us in mind.

please call me at 545-6818 and I'll come pick it up. Thank-you! |

I agree with the suggestion of putting pet etiquette tips in the
next newsletter. Forgive me if this has already been done but if
it has we should do it again. I love animals and think they are a
wonderful asset to families but we need to have some common
courtesy towards our neighbors. A new family recently moved in and
they keep their dogs out most of the time. This would be fine
except that they bark ALL of the time. Furthermore when it is 19
degrees outside they really should be let in. If we cannot
control, train or care for our animals; we should not have them. I
feel sorry for the people around them that are trying to sell
their homes. -anonymous |

Just wanted to say thanks for getting the speed limit signs on
Gracewood! rp |
| |
Thank you very much for creating this marvelous website! JH |
| |
For once, the City came thru with its word regarding the speed
limit signs on Gracewood Drive from Benjamin Pkwy to Timber Lane
and vice versa! As of today, 12/18/07, the signs are in place @
each of the locations - on Gracewood heading toward Fernwood, and
on Gracewood from Fernwood to Timber Lane. Hooray for Our Side!!!!

PLEASE !!!!!! If you walk your Dog's. don't allow them to make a
deposit on my lawn. I have children, and they keep stepping in it.
If I catch you allowing your doggie to make deposit's, I will come
knocking on your door to clean shoes. ME |

To the people in the neighborhood who keep everything going and do
all the legwork – awesome job. We appreciate you all!!! MO |

The Ronald McDonald house is an amazing resource to so many
families, I am so happy that our neighborhood does the luminaries.
We have friends who have a very premature baby in a hospital 2
hours from their home and the Ronald McDonald House took a lot of
burden off their shoulders. It is such a good organization – if
you are not familiar with what the Ronald McDonald house does you
should check them out online.
To the neighbor who threw the newsletter away because of the Jack
Murphy article, why? Who cares if you like him or not? Do you not
like doing things to help kids, particularly at Christmastime? Do
you not see that the whole purpose of the lights is to give
something to kids who need a little extra help? Personal feelings
aside, you have to admit that he helps our neighborhood make a
difference. Let’s do something nice and not let something so good
be tainted with negative comments. Tis the Season, after all. Bah
Humbug… MO |

Thank you for a
really great newsletter. Very informative and done very
professionally. We are lucky to have such a great community. AG
|
| |
I have a question concerning the
color insert in the newsletter. On one side it says 'I am of
the opinion', and shows pictures of our neighbors? Are these
the good neighbors? Because on the otehr side it shows
neighbors and has the title 'Heres to lying'. Can these
people be trusted? AN |
| |
As soon as I started reading the
newsletter, and it looked great, I came across the section on Jack
Murphy. That is when I tossed the newsletter in the trash.
What a waste of a good newsletter. NW |

Very
nice newsletter this month! great job- thanks!! |
| |
I've been working on the Murphy's Kids
event since day 1. Several times, I've heard this suggestion of
"lets stop giving all this money to Murphy's Kids and give it to
the neighborhood instead". I think it's time to clear this up once
and for all. The reason the Murphy's Kids Event is such a success
is because there are a group of devoted volunteers willing to go
to any lengths to make it work. All our spare time and energy are
spent soliciting businesses, pro curring donations, working with
Jack, and researching how we can make it bigger and better every
year so we can help as many children as possible. We work on this
project practically all year, there really is no down time. FYI,
the very same group of people working on this also handle the
Luminary project and sales, put on the Fall Fling, do the Easter
Egg Hunt, and the Newsletter, the Neighborhood Clean-up, and
manage to do it 95% by donations, costing the neighborhood
nothing. Add to that fact the spirit of joy and all the
beautifully decorated homes that come with it, and that's what
makes it such a success.
So far,
2,410.00 has been collected for Murphy's Kids. It breaks down like
this;
1) 500.00 from Margie Phipps, ReMax Reality Consultants
2) 500.00 from Rice Toyota
3) 250.00 from Wendover Pediatrics
4) 460.00 from the efforts of Jim Webb
5) 600,00 in pledges from Jo-Ann Peck, 95% of those coming from
outside of the neighborhood.
6) 160.00 cash on hand from Belks Employees
7) Also, all prizes, including the Grand Prize of 1000.00, have
been donated by area merchants.
What this means
is the fact the only money that Murphy's Kids gets from Guilford
Hills is money residents CHOOSE to donate or pay as an entry fee
for the decorating contest, and when you ad it up, it's a small
percentage. It was decided at the October Board meeting that the
GHUC should be dedicated to the unity of the Neighborhood, not
raising money. All agreed each sub-committee should be responsible
for raising it's own money, and the Newsletter Committee and the
Beautification Committee are perfect examples of how that works if
people are willing to do the work! The newsletter is paying for
itself through solicited ads and beautification has organized
their wreath sale to raise monies for their projects. It was also
decided a separate fund raising committee should be formed to
raise money solely for the GHUC, or the 'Neighborhood', if you
please. I would like to suggest that everyone who has so strongly
objected to the Murphy's Kids Campaign redirect their energies to
the Chairing and formation of said fund raising committee. If all
of you are willing to work as hard as we do and be as devoted,
you'll have no trouble at all raising money to 'build' the
Neighborhood. I would be glad to help in any way I can. Jo-Ann

First, welcome to the neighborhood! I
do so love to hear that new people have moved in and are happy
with their neighbors...I felt the same way when I moved in a year
and 1/2 ago. Also, being heavily involved in neighborhood
activities, I am happy to be able to "clear the air" on your
misconception that we're giving "neighborhood monies" to anything
other than the neighborhood. We have two "neighborhood
fundraisers" and those are the luminary campaign and the wreath
campaign. For each luminary we sell, $1.50 goes straight to the
neighborhood with $5.00 going to Ronald McDonald House! For each
wreath we sell, $6.00 (or $7.00...depending on how many we sell)
goes straight to the Beautification Committee! Our goal this year
is to sell 1,000 luminaries which will mean $5,000 for Ronald
McDonald House, and $1,500 for Guilford Hills. If we could sell
100 wreaths, that could bring between $600-$700 in for the
Beautification Committee. Isn't that awesome? We (meaning the
committee members) feel strongly that these two "neighborhood
fundraisers" will grow quite significantly, and be strong vehicles
to bring money into the neighborhood. Contributions from residents
are always welcome, too! Now...as for Murphy's Kids. Anything
given to this is donated by individuals that wish for their money
to go there...or from merchants that feel the same way. This local
charity is strongly supported in the community as a whole...not
just Guilford Hills. And if it weren't for individual and merchant
commitment to Murphy's Kids, our Christmas Decorating Contest and
Party would not be what they are today. The Grand Prize of $1,000
is a donation by Yost & Little, which is intended to provide
incentive for residents of Guilford Hills to donate $25.00 (entry
fee) and "Light Up the Night for Murphy's Kids." The other cash
donation of $500 from Oakcrest Restaurant and all the prizes
donated by local merchants is intended to do the same. Can you
imagine what it would be like, if 200 neighbors would decorate
their houses? We not only could donate $5,000 to this charitable
organization, but this neighborhood would be a "shining light" in
more ways than one in Greensboro. And you, in turn (if you
participated in the contest), would have a very good chance of
winning some extremely nice prizes...if not the grand prize. But
really...it's all intended to bring the neighborhood and the
community together during Christmas...not cause any kind of
division. There is a great sense of fulfillment knowing that what
you're doing...or what we're doing...is helping such worthy
causes...Ronald McDonald House, Murphy's Kids (which can be broken
down into lots of local support)...plus our own neighborhood! With
you being new, maybe you weren't here last year...but the
neighborhood looked awesome!!! We're hoping for an even bigger and
better turnout than last year. And...because it is "such a good
thing," we've already got a sponsor on board for next year's
events! Please do take the time to read this month's issue of the
newsletter...maybe it will aid in alleviating any additional
concerns you may have about "neighborhood monies" and "Murphy's
Kids." Also...I will be glad to talk to you personally if you'd
like. I hope this helps...Peggy Bruton, Newsletter Editor,

My name is Melissa peck and I live at
Surry Dr. with my parents Chris and Jo-Ann Peck and my daughter
Madison. My mom, Jo-Ann, is the person who started selling the
luminaries, and also started the Guilford Hills committee and all
the other stuff like the fall festival, the decorating contest, and
the Easter egg hunt. I thought our neighborhood looked beautiful
last year with all the decorations and the luminaries.I also
thought it was great to raise so much money for charities that
help sick kids. I love Ronald McDonald house and Murphy's kids. My
sister almost had to ask both for help a couple of weeks ago, and
she lives in the neighborhood too. I am so proud of my Mom for
starting all this. She has made some really cool friends, helps
everyone she can, and takes care of us too.Try the decorating
contest. You might have fun. Welcome to the neighborhood.MELISSA

We recently moved to this neighborhood and
love the way our neighbors work together. Can we stop all
the money that is going to Murphies Kids and use the neighborhood
money for work in this neighborhood? I think we should grow first,
then give our money away. |

I love checking the web site because it is
updated so rapidly. Thanks for doing such a terrific job! KJ |

I am a fairly new resident, as of last
February, and am delighted to discover this group. My
neighbor told me that you are considering closing the road at
Battleground directly across from the Target Shopping Center
entrance. Please do not do this!! That is the only way to turn
left onto Battleground with the safety of a traffic light. All
other entrances to Battleground present a great deal of traffic,
and turning left is a real problem. I use this route several times
a week, and closing it would be a great inconvenience. Thank
you for the good work you do. |
| |
Thanks for sharing the information so
quickly. I am printing the info off for a couple of my neighbors
that do not have a computer, and they do live alone. |

My
husband and I moved to Guilford Hills last year. We love the work
the committee is doing. I was wondering if some of the residents
who have lived here a long time or have family members who have
lived here a long time could share their old pictures of the
neighborhood? It would be great to have a section on the web page
– I am fascinated by history and think it would be neat to see
pictures of the neighborhood from the 50’s – current. LP |

I live in Guilford Hills (N. Elam) and just
wanted to say that while I don't participate in the activities
that go on, I still do appreciate what you're doing with the
newsletter and other community events. Thank you for that and
please continue. A. |

If
you haven't noticed, there is not ONE speed limit sign(25mph) on
Gracewood between Benjamin Pkwy & Fernwood. Consequently, drivers
going both directions "fly" through there. I know - I live on
Gracewood. We need to get the city "on the stick" and put up at
least one sign, preferably entering Gracewood from Benjamin and
one entering Gracewood @ Fernwood going toward Benjamin. There are
quite a few children and walkers in that area every day. You take
your life in your hands if you're walking there, particularly
since people continue to park on both sides of the street. JR |
| |
Community Watch-I think this is such a
wonderful idea. Keep up the good work!! NT |
| |
The newsletter was very informative.....I
have just a couple of concerns I would like to share. It's fall
and the raking of the leaves has begun. Each year the leaves raked
to the curb seem to inch further into the street. I can understand
folks don't want the leaves to kill their grass while waiting for
the city to begin leave p/u - however, by now we all have dead
lawns. Add to the leaves being in the street and many of these
same folks, for some reason, don't want their trash cans on their
yards and they are placed over the curb as well. As the leaves
increase over the curb the trash cans seem to creep further out
into the street. I find this extremely dangerous - especially when
you add cars parked on the street and little people that play ball
and such in the streets to the equation. I find it really
frightening, especially at night that there may be children or
animals lurking around in these leaves that are in the roadway.
Perhaps a friendly reminder to the neighborhood that the roadways
are for vehicular traffic not leaves and trash cans. Keep up the
good work. LC |
| |
A
friend who lives fairly close by sent me this, and I thought I
should alert our neighborhood in case the guy spoken of here
should try this with our folks here in Guilford hills. People
should be warned to NEVER open the door to ANY stranger. Claiming
to be selling something for a charitable organization or asking
for money for a seemingly innocent reason or charity may just be a
door-opener for rape, murder or home invasion. For instance, the
Boston Strangler posed as a maintenance man for the city, and in
every instance, he was let in voluntarily. Not once was a door
forced. Women died for their trusting nature. If approached, do
not open the door. Lock it! Ask who they are, then make an excuse,
(" I don't need it, thank you", "Excuse me, my husband is calling
for me", for example, to make them think you're not alone if you
are.) and then immediately call 911 and tell the police, make sure
your doors are locked and stay on the phone til they arrive. Pass
this on to your friends in other neighborhoods. A. Woodview |
| |
In addition to keeping your house
locked, it is almost imperative that you keep your cars locked
also, even if you are at home. Most cars that are stolen are left
unlocked, giving an invitation to a car thief to jump in and "hot
wire" the car and be gone. Don't be lulled into the misconception
that it takes several minutes to hot wire a car. It takes an
experienced car thief only a few seconds to hot wire it, start it,
and be gone! I speak from experience. I've had mine stolen before.
JR |
| |
We
seem to be developing a problem with barking dogs. I'd like to
suggest that the next issue of the newsletter have a separate
flyer with some pet etiquette tips. In addition to cleaning up,
training dogs not to bark, or keeping them inside during normal
sleeping hours would help. People should also be discouraged from
letting their pets roam the neighborhood unattended, which
contributes to this. |
| |
First
of all thanks for your good work on the re-zoning attempt. Now
about the noise. This once peaceful neighborhood is getting kind
of noisy. It is Sunday evening and for several hours I had to
listen to a rock concert that was taking place on Battleground
Avenue. I had to listen to it last night as well. I live on
Gracewood Drive and it sounded like it was across the street! Can
they do that? Can we talk with the city about how late and how
loud these events can be? DS |
| |
I will offer the mixture from Jerry Baker,
PBS Series. It works so well that any little fur balls coming to
visit your yard will stop in their tracks; cats, dogs, even the
flies and other winged vermin, will not hurt butterflies or the
bees. The mixture is: 1 cup Lemon soap, 1 cup Lemon Ammonia, and 1
Cola. Place in sprayer, attach to garden hose and spray entire
yard and flower beds too. Your grass will be greener and person
leading the dog will never understand why their dog took them to
the other side of the street. It is great to watch this happen, a
real treat.
It also stops fleas, ticks and slugs. HB |
| |
We love the new logo for the website.
The changes make the website so much better. And thank you for the
newsletter someone left in my mail box. It is good to have
this in our neighborhood. We will be at the fall fling next
week. |
| |
Does anyone have a good idea how to
approach people about parking their vehicles on their front yards
without getting them defensive and angry? This is indeed an issue
since it gives our neighborhood a "low-class shoddy look" and
there is no reason on earth that people can't park their vehicles
in their driveway or on the road like everyone else in the
neighborhood. Any suggestions here? AN |
| |
I have been dealing with pet owners using
my front lawn as a “pet park” for years. I would love to finally
be able to plant flowers at the bottom of my driveway without
having to dig thru their pet’s urine or feces. I don’t think a
good neighbor would continue killing their neighbors plants, year
after year. I don’t want to cause problems with neighbors and
since I have to wait on some of them to move their pet from my
driveway entrance so I can drive up it, I assume they are not
aware of their rude behavior. How to I close the “Pet Park”
located in my front lawn? Putting out signs would only result in
vandalism, so I believe educating the pet walker is the key.
Hopefully they can and will read the newsletter.
Here is my philosophy: (I have pets TOO!!) “if you are not
smart enough to control your pet, Your not smart enough to have a
pet” . Do the pet a favor, find it a good home where it can be
stimulated by someone smarter than it is. Signed, Dead
plants again this YEAR! |

I would like to congratulate and thank Billy and Michelle Marine
and the GHUC for the fantastic idea of and job they did with the
Neighborhood clean-up today at Guilford Hills Park. The
organization, was perfect, the services were outstanding, and the
volunteers were helpful and a whole LOT of fun to spend a little
time with. I would also like to thank our President Nicki Dodd and
volunteers Peggy Bruton, Jim Webb, Kelly Hale, for all the hard
work I saw they and the Marines do today. The GHUC is doing a
REMARKABLE job, and I am proud to live in this Neighborhood with
people who care so much!
THANK-YOU ALL. Jo-Ann Peck |

Recently relocated back to my "home town" and "home neighborhood".
My children and I are currently living with family on Hiawatha
Drive until my home sells in Wake Forest......then we wish to
purchase in Guilford Hills! It's great to be back...and I look
forward to all of the upcoming events and helping out within our
neighborhood. G. |

I just wanted to says THANKS to the committee for all the hard
work and diligence in organizing activities to make our
neighborhood a great place to live. This small group of volunteers
has spent a lot of time and effort to keep this organization going
and all of us as residents should do whatever we can to support
the effort. RP |
| |
I grew up on Fernwood and have recently just moved back. I think
that what the neighborhood is doing is great and give thanks to
you for making the neighborhood that I left 10 years ago seem like
the same place. I went for a walk last night with my 2 year old
daughter and saw the same faces from years ago, which means that
the community around us is very solid. Not to mention that even
though I was cautious of my surroundings I was not worried about
crime as I enjoyed watching my little girl eat her popsicle from
the corner store. I just want to extend my gratitude and time if
needed for any projects. .... thanks
again for all that you do. SS |
| |
DID YOU KNOW... Contributions to the GHUC General Fund DO NOT go
to fund our Neighborhood's Charitable events! The events( MURPHY'S
KIDS, LUMINARIES, FALL FLING) are developed and run STRICTLY on
DONATIONS from the outside business community and sponsors. |

I just attended the National Night Out event and thought it was
fantastic! Thanks! Jody G |
