At Our Last Meeting

Meeting Date: June 19, 2008
Location: Parkway Baptist Church
Number of Attendees: 17

Welcome & Housekeeping items

Michelle called the meeting to order at 7:35pm.  Michelle welcomed everyone present and thanked everyone for coming. Michelle then went through Courtesy Request for all attendees to follow.

Michelle went through the minutes of the previous meeting and no changes were made to the read minutes.

Kevin gave a Treasurer’s Report. Newsletter funding is becoming a concern, but no other real issues.

Guest Speakers

Michelle introduced Officer Cayton (373-3677, jim.cayton@greensboro-nc.gov ) for our Community Watch segment. He basically said we had a “boring” neighborhood based on the latest stats he had reviewed. He then went through just a list of reminders to help protect your stuff and your home. Get ID#’s for bicycles and do home inventories. On the home inventories, write down the item, brand, Model number, and serial number. Get appraisals on the appropriate items (jewelry, silver, etc.) Once documented take the listings and appraisals and put into a safety deposit box for safe keeping, or somewhere safe outside of the home. He discussed free home security inspections that the Greensboro Police Department can provide. He then briefly discussed National Night Out and then wrapped up by taking some questions from those in attendance.

Neighborhood Topics

The revised by-laws were then voted on and adopted by a yes vote from all of those in attendance.

Michelle spoke about the Greensboro Neighborhood Congress (GNC) and gave a recap of the last meeting she attended. She stated the next meeting is July 12th. GHUC was approved for a $500 grant to help us with our Fall Fling expenses. The GNC continued to encourage us to seek funding for a community garden.

Michelle moved on the discussed the GHUC proposal to amend the future land use map of Greensboro. The Greensboro Planning Board unanimously passed our proposal, and now the amendment moves on to the City Council for their approval. We still need to get additional signatures and bodies to attend the City Council meeting on July 15th. Joann suggested a signature raising event by doing a Saturday at the Park thing.

National Night Out was discussed next. It was suggested that a sub-committee needed to form to help bring this together. Most of those in attendance agreed we needed to keep the event low-key and small scale. An ice-cream social was suggested.

Joann Peck spoke next about the Fall Fling. She felt the grant award would be a big help. She was already out trying to line up sponsors and events for the Fling. Bigger and better was the rally cry. Pet adoption, bounce around, Spooky Town, a Band (Susie Nelson’s band), Bake off, and maybe a dance contest.

Joann moved on the Walk-a-thon for Murphy’s Kids. It will be Saturday, September 6th. She has lined up water and breakfast for those that will be participating. She is looking to build on the $4,000 that was raised last year. Sponsorship forms will available soon.

Open Discussion

Michelle opened up the floor for any topics and issues for those in attendance.

Michelle wanted to get ideas on how to increase participation levels for meetings and assistance in bringing group event together. She asked for people in attendance to bring a neighbor with you for the next meeting.

This discussion led to the issue of Street Captains, and their dwindling numbers.

Michelle then mentioned that she was applying to attend the City Academy, which will be an eleven week course that teaches and shows how the city and county governments work. She was applying along with neighborhood resident, Jillian Haeseler. The course would create conflicts for her and future neighborhood meeting but we will cross that bring when the time comes.

Michelle again thanked everyone for coming and concluded the meeting at 8:40.

Meeting Date: April 26, 2008
Location: Parkway Baptist Church
Number of Attendees: 16

Intro & Welcome

Michelle called the meeting to order at 10AM. Michelle welcomed everyone present and asked for those in attendance to introduce themselves and give their street name. Michelle then presented the new Courtesy Request for all attendees to follow. If neighbors will please be courteous and respectful during all meetings, turn off cell phones, wait to be recognized before speaking out and try to keep discussion participation to 3 mins or less, the goal of keeping monthly meetings to 1 hour or less can be achieved.
Guest Speakers

Keith Brown was introduced as the first speaker, and his topic was the about Petition Protest and its history with the City of Greensboro. Greensboro is the only city in the state that does not recognize Petition Protest. The law allows neighbors to file protest petitions against proposed rezonings. A successful petition requires three-fourths vote by the City Council, rather than a simple majority to approve a zoning change. Keith has started a grass roots effort to raise awareness of the value of this type of protest and gain support in getting the city of Greensboro to reinstate the protest petition option. His blog site can provide updated information and progress on the issue. The website is: http://protestpetitiongreensboro.blogspot.com .

The second speaker was Kim Fuquay. She discussed the upcoming vote on May 6th for the School Bond proposition. She discussed the need for the funds and the impact good schools have as far as property values. More information can be found on the school bonds and all the projects associated with it at: http://www.gcsnc.com/construction/index.htm .

Neighborhood Topics

Ashley Fuquay spoke next about the need for current and future GHUC board members to sign an integrity pledge. Basically, the pledge is a promise to the neighbors of Guilford Hills that the board will work in a professional and open environment for the betterment of the neighborhood as a whole. The pledge also provides an acknowledgement that the board represents leadership to Guilford Hills, as well as our neighborhood to the greater community.

Peggy Bruton spoke about the Greensboro Neighborhood Congress (GNC) and the need for Guilford Hills to become a part of this organization. This organization helps in applying for grants and provides a voice for the neighborhoods it represents to various city officials and organizations. The first step to becoming a part of the Neighborhood Congress was for our neighborhood to vote on joining the GNC. Michelle called for a vote to join the GNC and the measure passed unanimously by all those in attendance.

Peggy continued with developments on Community Watch. Peggy expressed the desire to utilize the Street Captains in an effort to increase the number of signatures to gain official Community Watch status. Discussion continued on when a Street Captain meeting should be held and where. The discussion then turned to a couple of recent developments that have occurred in the neighborhood. Bottom line on these developments were Call the Police on all incidents!

Jim Craft asked for the floor to make a few comments. He wanted to acknowledge the "In as much" Project of Parkway Baptist Church. This project provides assistance for people that can not accomplish certain projects around their homes on their own, either because of age, resources, etc. One of our neighbors contacted the church looking for assistance with some yard work. Jim just wanted to let others know that the group did a very commendable job. He also wanted to state that the delivery of the newsletter allows someone a great way to meet your neighbors and become attune to their concerns. Finally, Jim had a suggestion for a future speaker related to tree care and maintenance. He provided the name and contact information to Michelle for future reference.

Michelle provided a current update on the by-laws. The By-laws have been amended to fit our organization. A copy of the proposed by-laws can be found at the GHUC website at: http://www.guilfordhills.org/bylaws-new.htm . Michelle asked everyone to review the proposed by-laws and offer suggestions and told everyone to be prepared to vote on them for adoption at the next neighborhood meeting.

Joann Peck spoke next on the upcoming events in the neighborhood. It was determined that the next neighborhood yard sale would be May 17th. We have several realtors interested in sponsoring the event. May 24th brings the Bicentennial picnic to our park. Joann is working on getting local fire and law enforcement participation and also trying to secure a bounce around for the event. It was discussed to have the picnic start at 4pm. Joann also proposed a summer event, Meet your Neighbor night. The event would be July 4th, and could possibly be a cook-out/ice cream event that would wrap up with everyone going to the fireworks down at the fields near the dead-end of Pembroke. It was decided to discussion this matter further at future meetings.

Open Discussion

Michelle opened up the floor for any topics and issues for those in attendance.

Kim Fuquay talked about the possibility of holding a Kindergarten party at the park for the neighborhood children that have completed Kindergarten at General Greene. Since General Greene does not hold a graduation on their premises for Kindergarten, Kim felt it would be a great way to acknowledge the accomplishments of the neighborhood kids. Possible dates needed to be considered and Joann would make the contacts to get Picnic tables once a date was determined.

Michelle wanted to discuss ways to increase participation, both at the meetings and with neighborhood projects. Michelle wanted feedback on changing meeting dates off Saturday. Meetings during the week would be easier for the Police to come for Community Watch discussions, but Michelle wanted to know if more neighbors would find it more convenient as well.

A couple of other quick comments were made related to adopting the park and recycling aluminum to raise money for GHUC.

Michelle thanked everyone for coming and concluded the meeting at 10:59.

GHUC Meeting November 17, 2007

The meeting was called to order by President Nicki Dodd. A brief announcement was made greeting everyone to the meeting, and welcoming new neighbors.

The minutes from the last meeting were read by Secretary Lee Wimbs, and the minutes were approved as read.

Kevin Black, Treasurer, gave the financial report. He distributed the printed spread sheets to those present. With the projected sales of luminaries, wreath sales, donations, and the decorating contest, we should have a profit. The report and budget was approved by the neighbors present.
Kim Fuquay reported on the sale of the luminaries. As of Friday, November 16, 48 kits had been sold. For the distribution of the luminaries and wreaths, tables will be set up labeled A-K, L-Z, and a purchase table for additional items. This should help with distribution of the items. The kits will be distributed in the parking lot, reducing the time and effort to move everything inside the church. Sign up would also be available for the decorating contest, and for purchase of additional luminaries.

Kim also discussed the recent trip to the Ronald McDonald house in Winston Salem. The goal is to sell 1000 kits this year, up from the 500 we sold last year. For each kit we sell for $ 6.50, $ 5.00 goes to the Ronald McDonald house. The remaining $1.50 will go to GHUC. Jo Ann Peck stated that visiting the Ronald McDonald house was a ‘humble experience’.

Rhonda asked everyone to bring a donation for the food drive for Urban Ministries when they come to pick up their luminaries.

Peggy Bruton stated 6 Christmas wreaths had been sold for $ 25.00 each, with $ 6.00 of each wreath sale going to the Guilford Hills Beautification Committee. The wreaths will be hand made by Bryon Wagoner prior to distribution of the wreaths. These are fresh wreaths, not pre-frozen items. It was suggested the street captains have a contest to see who can sell the most.

Next Peggy discussed the neighborhood newsletter. This would be a special holiday edition, on different paper or possibly in color. There are more people interested in advertising in the newsletter, and hopefully these ads would cover all the costs for printing. Also an interview with Jack Murphy will appear in this edition. Nicki congratulated Peggy on the newsletter, the ads, and stated that she and the other neighbors enjoy receiving the newsletter.

Jo Ann Peck was introduced next to discuss the progress with the Christmas Decorating contest. The banners and their locations were discussed, along with a thank you for Billy Marine for adapting the banners for reuse this year. The categories for the judging have been changed for a wider range of entries. A silent auction will be available on the day of the luminary pick ups for those ‘last minute’ gifts.

The next issue was the discussion of the Christmas party. Jo Ann told the group which items had to be wrapped, and what kind of items could be brought from home. The guidelines for having the party at the Elks Club were discussed, and it was also discussed having a party at the Oakcrest Restaurant.

Lee Wimbs discussed the growth of our website, and the new items that were planned for the future. Charts were passed around showing the growth, the progress of the website, and the increasing interest in our ‘automated e-mail service’. One of the items of interest was the planned cooking and food pages. Because Lee had paid all the expenses for our website, Kim Fuquay asked what the expenses were and the group was given a listing of expenses. Reimbursing The Wimbs for the website cost when we have the financial ability to do so was discussed. Lee stated that until that time, he is willing to pay the website expenses.

As the Community Watch Captain, Nicki Dodd told the group of events occurring in Greensboro, and how lucky we were we live in a safer neighborhood. Pam Rogers, from the Greensboro Police Department, was introduced and verified how fortunate we were to live in this neighborhood. The story that appeared on WFMY-TV was discussed, and the opinion was that this was a positive story for Guilford Hills. Both Nicki and Officer Rogers told everyone that when there is a problem, or anything suspicious, they should call the police. It is their responsibility to investigate that issue. We do not want our neighbors to put themselves in danger by following suspects, etc.

Officer Rogers also said she would do follow up investigations for Guilford Hills on reports concerning gang activity. That at this time this was not an issue for us to be concerned about. There hopefully will be a joint meeting between the Police, Guilford Hills, and surrounding neighborhoods on gang awareness. A reminder to keep motion detector lights on your homes and to keep your cars locked was given.

One of the neighbors suggested using the ‘panic’ button on your car keys. If you suspect someone is tampering with your automobile at night, press the panic button. And if you are walking from your car to your house at night, have your finger on that button. It is also a good idea to keep your keys with this panic button on your bedside table. If your home is broken into this is a good way to awaken your neighbors for assistance.

There were general discussions concerning the WFMY news story, continue calling the Police, sharing the history of Guilford Hills on the website, and getting our Beautification Committee active again.

A letter to the GHUC was read by Jim Craft in reply to neighbors wanting to close Markland, at the Battleground intersection. It was suggested we put a survey on the website to see how neighbors feel concerning this issue. Sheari Wimbs stated it would be great if the bank would clean up their property of all the dead trees and trash. Rhonda asked if the median in Markland could be relocated to Battleground to reduce the thru traffic.

The topic of By-Laws was next on the agenda. Some neighbors feel portions of it need to be re-written for issues unique to Guilford Hills. Neighbors volunteered to serve on this committee to review our by-laws and make recommendations where they see a need for change. Brennon will chair this committee.

Before the meeting was adjourned, Nicki pointed to signup sheets for committees within Guilford Hills and requested that individuals sign up to volunteer on a committee.

The meeting was then adjourned by President Nicki Dodd.

GHUC Meeting October 23, 2007

 1) Opening Statement:  Our President Nicki Dodd opened the meeting by welcoming everyone.

2) Approval of Minutes from the September meeting: The minutes were read by Secretary Lee Wimbs. There were no corrections or additions and the minutes were approved as presented.

3) Treasurer’s Report: In the absence of Kevin Black, Treasurer, Nicki Dodd gave the financial report by distributing a spread sheet that had all income and expenses listed.  Our cash balance is $302.79.  Of that $85 is needed to pay for the port-a-john for the Fall Fling, $160 is for Murphy’s Kids, $26 for luminary orders.  The remainder will be applied to paying for the newsletter.   We are $59.53 short to pay all the above. If our plans and goals are met we should make a profit with our Christmas Party and the sale of luminaries.

4) Community Watch: Our Community Watch Captain Nicki Dodd introduced Captain Holder of the Greensboro Police Department who discussed a) the safety of our neighborhood, b) details on the pizza robbery, c) the new loitering ordinance, d) how the Police department was combining their efforts when dealing with gangs in Greensboro, and e) the importance to call 911 when we see a problem, it is their duty to respond to our calls.

To have a recognized Community Watch we need 504 homes out of our 720 homes in Guilford Hills signed up to participate in this program.  Currently we have 139 homes willing to assist us.  Captain Holder indicated this is an excellent program for neighbors to participate in for their own safety.  Jo-Ann said the first contact could be with the street captains to get more homes involved.

Captain Holder reported there were two reports of larceny from an auto in our area.  Mike Frances, one our CRO’s, was selected as the officer of the month. Nicki Dodd also indicated we would send a letter to the Chief of Police giving credit to the officers who responded to the pizza robbery. Kay Jones told of her incident with a neighbor who was confused and got lost while walking in the neighborhood.

A motion from Julian Hessler was that we meet with another neighborhood and their committee to discuss gang awareness.  This motion was seconded by Jim Webb. The motion was passed.  A short discussion followed about the possibility of doing this in January or February.

5) Bicentennial Torchbearer Nominee: We received two (2) nominations for someone to represent Guilford Hills with this ceremony. The Board had previously read and selected Alexis Somers as our nominee. When the announcement was made Peggy Bruton objected to the Board making the decision and requested that the October 20th deadline be extended because she had a nomination she did not get in prior to the deadline.  Discussion followed on both issues. After reading the nominations, a motion was made by Sheari Wimbs to accept the decision of the Board; it was seconded.  The motion to accept the Board of Director’s decision was passed by a majority.

6) Markland Petition: There is a lot of traffic coming from Battleground and using Markland to get to Cornwallis and Benjamin Parkway. This creates a lot of noise, trash, and traffic for the residents living on Markland, and may be a factor when selling or renting property. A petition was discussed to approach the City of Greensboro concerning closing Markland where it intersects with Battleground. This would be accomplished with a concrete barrier and signs. Items discussed were a) the location of the bus stop for the city, b) getting the city to clean up the trash, and c) the planting of trees and shrubs to restrict the noise coming from Battleground. And there were discussions concerning this would restrict our neighbors traveling from the shopping area near Target and Harris Teeter returning home. Bonnie Wallace has the petition and would like help from the neighborhood.  The petition has been signed by 28 residents not residing on Markland and half of the Markland residents.

7) Website: A report on the website was given by Lee Wimbs.  There are currently 124 neighbors on the ‘automated email list’ in Guilford Hills.  This is a valuable method to notify neighbors of events in our neighborhood.  There are more ‘hits’ or visitors to the site.  This website has been paid for until November 2008, and the fees were discussed for maintaining this site. A second discussion was concerning the Home of the Month feature on the website, and why there was not a picture for the previous month.  It was suggested we have someone on the Beautification Committee make the selections and to supply the pictures for both the website and the newsletter. Kim Fuquay and Peggy Bruton both had nominated homes but we did not know who the owners were.  Kim and Peggy were asked to supply photos for the web site and newsletter as well as the names of the residents; they were asked to get permission of the neighbors to use a photo of their home on the website and in the newsletter.

8) Newsletter: A report was given by Peggy Bruton on the Guildford Hills newsletter.  She discussed the schedule for printing, and the cost of the ads.  For us to continue with the printing we need to sell more ads. Peggy said she has enough money coming in ads to pay the expenses for the remainder of this year.

9) Beautification Christmas Wreath Sale:  This item will be discussed at our next meeting.  Details will be in the November newsletter.

10) Fall Fling: Thanks were given to Jo-Ann Peck for all her efforts with our Fall Fling. Jo-Ann then gave thanks to a) Billy and Michelle for the paint, generators, and the shade tent; b) to Peggy and Kelly for their efforts with the ‘witches’ and ‘spooky town’; c) to Mary and Rhonda for the bags and tables; d) to the Ledbetter’s for their efforts; e) to the Eckenrods for the bon fire; f) to Peggy for her efforts with the pumpkins and flowers; and to g) Jo-Ann for helping with the Moonwalk.  This was a great improvement over the event last year and an estimate was between 300 and 400 neighbors enjoying our Fall Fling.  Next year it was mentioned we do not need a DJ, and maybe we could incorporate a street festival. After all expenses we made a profit of $22.00.

11) Luminaries: Our chairperson Kim Fuquay was in charge of the discussion with our Luminary sales.  Kim announced that Rhonda Ayers will be assisting her as co-chair.  Out of the 700 luminaries we had last year, we have 200 left.  It was discovered we had not paid for the remaining luminaries so this will reduce our profit this year. This year we will open our luminary sale to the public. Jo-Ann will donate and place an ad in the newspaper advertising the luminaries. All of the sales will be prepaid, and the payments can be sent to our post office box.  The date for the pickup is Saturday, December 8th between the hours of 10:00AM and 4:00PM. The luminaries will be displayed on Saturday, December 15th.  In the event of rain the luminaries will be displayed on Saturday, December 22nd.

12) Christmas Decorating Contest: The entrance fee for the Christmas Decorating contest is $25.00. There are five categories for the contest: 1) Best Overall, 2) Blue Christmas (original), 3) ‘Griswold’ (most lights), 4) Most Festive, and 5) Traditional.

The Christmas party will be held at the Elks Club following the decorating contest.  This party will be from 7:00PM until 11:00PM.  Due to the size of the room we are limited to 150 people.  Tickets may be purchased in advance for $8.00 for an adult and $3.00 for a child.  Anyone above the age of 10 must purchase an adult ticket. Food can be brought but guidelines stated by the Elks Club must be followed. There will be door prizes and you must be present to win.  We anticipate that some people will leave the party after Santa Claus leaves and the Decorating Contest results are announced.  If that does happen and someone would like to purchase a ticket to enter at the door, we will sell them a ticket; but we must keep our attendance to no more than 150 people in the room at one time to comply with the fire ordinances.

In an earlier board meeting a motion was made by Ashley Fuquay that: ‘Since we cut prices for the Christmas Party we keep the Decorating Contest and the Christmas party separate.  Therefore there will not be free tickets for entrance to the Christmas Party’.  The motion was passed by all members present.

13) General Discussion:

a) We need a ‘Fund Raising Committee’ to assist getting money for the operation of Guilford Hills Unification Committee.

b) There will be a trip made to the Ronald McDonald House in Winston Salem to meet and discuss how this organization can benefit from the luminary sales made by Guilford Hills. If you want go to the Ronald McDonald House please let Jo-Ann Peck know ASAP.

c) Our next meeting will be Saturday, November 17th, at Parkway Baptist Church.

14) The meeting was adjourned by President Nicki Dodd.

GHUC Meeting September 29, 2007

a) Opening Statement: Our President Nicki Dodd opened the meeting with a welcome of neighbors attending. Peggy Bruton displayed our suggestion box and told the group that Phil Czornij would be in charge of the box and report to the Board on the information posted in the box.

b) Approval of Minutes from the August meeting: The minutes were read by Secretary Lee Wimbs. There were no corrections or additions and the minutes were approved as presented.

c) Treasurer’s Report: Kevin Black, Treasurer, gave the financial report by distributing a spread sheet that had all income and expenses listed. With the current funds available we can print the newsletter for October and will rely on funding received from our Fall Fling and the sale of luminaries to support future printing. Kevin has setup a checking account and a post office box for the Guilford Hills committee. A word of thanks was given to Kim Fuquay for her assistance transferring finances from the previous team of officials.

d) Community Watch: Our Community Watch Captain Nicki Dodd gave a report on the robbery in the neighborhood of a pizza delivery driver. During this discussion Officer Pam Rogers of the Greensboro Police was introduced. She worked with Nicki to provide additional details concerning this event. For clarification 1) the robbery took place at the intersection of Overbrook and Gracewood, 2) the suspects had a loaded gun, 3) the suspects ran from Guilford Hills to Evergreen Drive, across Benjamin Parkway, where they were arrested, 4) the driver lived on Timber, 5) the suspects were not residents of this neighborhood, and 6) this was not a planned robbery. Nicki gave credit to the Police for their quick response to this situation.

The issue of posting signs in the neighborhood for ‘Community Watch’ was discussed. But a minimum number of households have not been reached to activate this program. A few of the neighbors have mentioned they will try and get a petition circulated to gather the required names.

New terms discussed were ‘SMOD’, standard mode of dress, and ‘tagging’, or the painting of signs and buildings with a ‘gang logo.’ Other topics discussed were 1) to ask neighbors to call the police at 373-2222 to report any suspicious activity and let the Police respond to the situation, 2) the planned sidewalks on Elam, 3) people parking in the bike lanes, and 4) a report of a postal worker kicking a dog while delivering mail.

e) Neighborhood Clean Up: A report on the recent neighborhood clean up was given by Billy and Michelle Marine. There was a full city dump truck, and part of a second truck, loaded with trash from Guilford Hills. A full trailer of hazardous waste was collected and properly disposed. This was a very successful project. Based on the response and resident comments we will schedule another clean up day in the spring. Some of the paint collected will be ‘repurposed’ and used for painting for the Fall Fling.

f) Walk A Thon: Jo Ann Peck gave a report on the recent Walk-A-Thon for Murphy’s Kids in our neighborhood. Due to late notification there was a lower than expected turnout of neighbors to participate in this event, but a total of $ 2500 in pledges was collected. This is enough to send one child to Victory Junction. This is another event that should be scheduled again. And mention was given to Billy Marine for his construction of a ‘mister’ tent to keep the walkers cool.

g) Website: Our web master Lee Wimbs reported a growth in visits to the Guilford Hills web site. Lee stated there were three (3) ways to communicate in this neighborhood: 1) the newsletter, 2) the website, and 3) an automated email system. Currently there are 107 neighbors signed up for this email service. A color graph was displayed showing the growth of our website.

h) Newsletter: A report was given by Peggy Bruton on the neighborhood newsletter. A printer has been obtained who will provide a scheduled printing for us. This will provide the newsletter on a regular schedule. Peggy detailed the printing layout, the costs to place ads in the newsletter, and the distribution process. A round of applause was given for her work on the newsletter.

i) Logo: Lee Wimbs explained the change of the logo used on the website and the newsletter due to concern of replacing the current logo displaying ‘little yellow houses’, and removing the slogan ‘the best neighborhood in the world’. The logo was replaced to provide us with our own, one of a kind, logo that was not a standard clip art that could be used by anyone. Our new logo concept was created by a couple of neighbors working to give us our own distinct image. This concept was refined by a graphics artist who was paid by private funds and not the neighborhood finances. On the topic of removing our ‘world’ slogan, this was an event that fell at the wrong time. During the process of replacing the logo and updating the newsletter and the website, this slogan was not visible. A new image displaying the slogan is located at the bottom of the main page for the website, and will appear on each issue of the newsletter. Positive comments were made by the attending neighbors on having their own logo, and the simplicity of the logo.

j) Beautification: Our chairperson for Beautification, Frank Stovall, was unable to attend this meeting and a report was given by Nicki Dodd. There are grants available for the beautification of Guilford Hills and a sub-group will be creating those grants to receive those funds. Some of the projects suggested are 1) a brick entrance marker for Guilford Hills, 2) neighborhood signs, 3) small flower gardens at our corner street signs, and 4) Christmas wreaths. These are projects that will be discussed in detail by the Beautification Committee. Beth Carroll of Fernwood Drive volunteered to chair the Christmas wreath sales.

k) Fall Fling: Our chairperson for the Fall Fling, Jo Ann Peck, shared the activities planned for our upcoming fall event. A flier that Peggy Bruton created was distributed at this meeting. There are events returning from last year and a number of new events for this year. A table/booth will be setup for Guilford Hills Unification Committee to distribute material on who we are and sell the 50/50 tickets

l) Luminaries: The sale of our luminaries was discussed by Jo Ann Peck in the absence of the committee chair, Kim Fuquay. They will sell for $6.50, with $5.00 going to the Ronald McDonald house. The remaining $1.50 will go to Guilford Hills. Peggy Bruton was asked to place an ad in the newsletter for neighbors to order luminaries in advance. There are about 200 luminaries stored from last year that are all for profit.

m) Christmas Decorating Contest: Based on time this topic was tabled until our October meeting.

n) General Discussion: The topics discussed were 1) appreciation for all the work Kay Jones has done for the neighbors, 2) the possibility of installing our mail boxes on the street, 3) a scheduled torch run in March as the opening of the Greensboro Bicentennial Celebration, and 4) a neighbor who would like to work with our younger neighbors in the construction and playing of traditional drums.

o) Closing: The meeting was closed with thanks for all the work, the need for volunteers, and the mention of getting tickets for the 50/50 raffle. Our meeting was adjourned by Nicki Dodd.

GHUC Meeting August 21, 2007

1.      Opening Statements:  Our President, Nicki Dodd, opened the meeting at 6:30PM at Parkway Baptist Church. The meeting was originally planned for our park but the meeting was relocated to the church due to the weather.

   2.      Home of the Month:  The home of the month for August is located at 2507 Overbrook, and is the home of Larry and Dianne Vance.

3.      Treasurer’s Report:  Our Treasure's report was given by Kevin Black who detailed our 'transitional period' in setting up our committee for a 'not for profit' status with a tax id.   Also was discussed was the obtaining of a post office box and setting up a checking account.

4.       National Night Out:  Nicki thanked everyone involved with our National Night Out for their support.  Special acknowledgement was given to Joy Scott for all of her efforts in organizing this event. This is one of the events that makes our neighborhood a better place to live. Nicki displayed a participation certificate we received from the Greensboro Police department. We are looking for a volunteer to keep a scrapbook containing all the certificates, pictures, and memories of Guilford Hills. If you are interested please contact Nicki.

5.      Community Watch:  Our Community Watch chairperson is Nicki Dodd. Nicki discussed items of concern in the neighborhood and what actions were being made to control 'unwanted elements'.  In some areas the Greensboro Police are working with us, but we as a neighborhood need to get more involved with our community watch program.  A reminder to all neighbors that if you see something wrong, call the Police.  They are here to help us.

6.      Neighborhood Clean Up:  On September 15th, we will have our Neighborhood clean up.  The discussion was held by Billy Marine and Debbie Meurs.  Debbie is the Safety Manager for the City of Greensboro.  We will have trucks located at our park for this Saturday event.  Neighbors can bring their unwanted materials and place them in the trucks.  Billy will have a trailer available for all the hazardous material such as paints and insecticides.

7.      Website:  Our webmaster Lee Wimbs reported an increase in the use of our website, and gave the credit to the signs located in the neighborhood.  He also mentioned some new features would be added in the future.

8.      Beautification:  There are plans currently for us to apply for grants for financial assistance with the beautification of our Guilford Hills neighborhood. This money would be used for street gardens, and possible entrance signs to our neighborhood.

9.      Newsletter:  Peggy Bruton gave a progress report on our newsletter.  We will sell ads to cover the cost of printing the newsletter, and Peggy has obtained a printer to publish the newsletter.  The newsletter should be available soon, and hopefully available every month.

10.    Luminaries:  A special thanks to Kim Fuquay who volunteered to chair this committee.  Volunteers are needed for this committee. Details on this event will be published in the newsletter and on the website.

11.    Walk-A-Thon:  The Walk Chairperson Jo Ann Peck gave a report on the Walk-A-Thon in our neighborhood scheduled for Saturday, September 8th, starting at 9:00AM. The walk should take approximately 45 minutes and will give us a chance to meet new neighbors. Jo Ann reported we have $2000 in donations.

12.    Fall Fling:  Our second annual Fall Fling is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th, with the activities starting at 3:00PM.  A list of materials needed will be placed on the website.

13.    Christmas Decorating Contest:  The Decorating contest will be held again this year, with a Christmas party held after the judging to present the winners their prizes. Details are being finalized with the location, the availability of food, and all the details to be announced later.

14.    Closing: Our meeting was closed at 8:40PM with the next meeting scheduled for Saturday, September 29th at Parkway Baptist Church.

Board of Directors Meeting August 6, 2007

Our Board Meeting for August 7th was called to order at 7:20PM by President Nicki Dodd.  This meeting was held at Nicki’s Overbrook Drive home.  Board members present were Nicki Dodd (President), Michelle Marine (Vice President), Lee Wimbs (Secretary), Kevin Black (Treasurer), and Jo Ann Peck (Past President). Absent members were Ashley Fuquay and Jim Webb.

 Topics discussed were:

1.      Goals of Guilford Hills Unification -  One of the major items discussed were the ‘goals of our Neighborhood’.  The board is currently working on a mission statement for the committee. Discussions were held on a) values for our committee, b) how money raised in our neighborhood could be spent for this neighborhood, c) the possibility of entrance signs for our neighborhood, and d) planning activities for the next year.

2.      National Night Out - Joy Scott, Chairperson of NNO to be held Tuesday, August 7th in Guilford Hills Park, provided details of the event.  She provided a list of what was occurring, how the food was obtained, a map giving us a layout of the activities, the location of the emergency-displayed vehicles, and an overview of expenses.

3.      Fall Fling -  Nicki asked Jo Ann Peck if she would act as chairperson for our Fall Fling (Saturday, October 13) to be held in our Guilford Hills Park. Jo Ann was the chairperson last year for this event.  Jo Ann provided details of where we currently were with this project.

4.      Newsletter - We are working with Peggy Bruton (Newsletter Co-Chairperson) to obtain sponsors for the printing of our Guilford Hills Newsletter.  Currently financial restraints have prevented us from printing this newsletter on a regular basis.  Hopefully with the money provided from sponsors we can distribute news of our neighborhood with a printed format of activities and events.

5.      Website - Lee Wimbs gave an update on the website for our neighborhood. The website has seen a drastic increase in activity since Ashley and Kim Fuquay had the signs printed and distributed in our neighborhood.  There is a feature on the website that allows a user to sign up for automated email from the website.  The number of ‘registered’ email users is 82, an increase from 23 only a month earlier.

6.      Beautification - As money is obtained from neighborhood events we hope to get the beautification committee involved with more projects.  Tall grass, cars parked in yards, and planting of flowers at street signs were discussed.

7.      Finances - Kevin Black presented a) a number of ideas on how we can document our money flow, b) the need to become a ‘not for profit’ organization, c) the need for a checking account, and d) the need for a post office box for our committee.

8.      Luminaries - The board discussed the sale of luminaries during the holidays and where the money should be spent.  This topic will be discussed at a later meeting.

9.      Murphy’s Kids - Another topic that was discussed was the amount of involvement with Murphy’s Kids. This topic was discussed with board members agreeing we should, as a community, support important concerns, but to what financial limits.  Some expressed concern that money collected in this neighborhood should be used strictly for the Guilford Hills neighborhood.  This topic will be discussed at a later meeting, and may require the complete project being decided by a neighborhood vote at a monthly meeting.

10.  Community Watch - One concern that neighbors have expressed is Community Watch.  This may become our top project.  There was a discussion on promoting this project with our website, our newsletter, and signs posted in the neighborhood. The conversations led to how neighbors and the Police were handling certain events in Guilford Hills, such as break-ins and the ‘blue parked car’.

11.  Neighborhood Clean Up - To keep property values up, and to be proud of our neighborhood, an area of concern is the lack of a committee or team to keep Guilford Hills clean.  The board agreed we do not have the needed authority to get a resident to cut grass, remove tree limbs, or to dispose of trash, but as a neighborhood we can help those who need our assistance.

After discussion and agreement on dates for regular Board meetings, this board meeting was adjourned at 9:40PM by our President.

GHUC Meeting July 28, 2007

Meeting called to order at 10:00 AM
29 people present

The meeting was started with opening statements Jo Ann Peck.  She stated she would like to run for re-election for President and how she felt about Guilford Hills.

► A statement written by Nicki Dodd about our Community Watch was read by Lee Wimbs. Following this report Officer Tim Tepidino was introduced.

► Officer Tepidino presented details about a couple of incidents that occurred in Guilford Hills. He advised each household should do a security check on their homes to ensure each home has secure locks, lights that detect movement, windows that lock properly, and areas that are not be seen for safety.  If the household requests, the Greensboro Police will provide a free inspection. If you notice anything suspicious, call the police first.

► We were given a first hand report by Shane Roberts, 9 years old,  who lives with his Grandmother Linda on Cherokee Dr. and has been attending the Victory Junction Camp for 4 Summers. He came to our meeting and shared the joy the Camp gives him. Shane puts a Neighborhood Face on the wonderful service Victory Junction Camp provides and a VERY personal touch on your contribution or participation in the Walk-a-thon, and lets us all see our hard work goes to help one of our very own.

► Lee Wimbs gave a report on the increase use of your web site.  A major factor in the increase is the use of signs in the neighborhood promoting the web site.  Thanks were given to Ashley and Kim Fuquay for obtaining the signs.  We may have to obtain additional signs due to requests from neighbors to have signs placed in their yards.

► A report on the printing of the newsletter was given by Peggy Bruton.  Details are progressing to have these printed by a printing company in exchange of advertising placed in the newsletter by a neighborhood restaurant.

► Frank Stovall, representing the beautification committee, discussed possibilities for additional corner sign activities such as the one at Quail and Fernwood.  Discussions were also held on getting signs at the major entrances to Guilford Hills.

If you have a community watch concern or want to sign up with out giving your information out you can e-mail Nicki at GHWATCH@AOL.COM  . There have been many concerns about drug activity in the neighborhood. If you are suspicious you nee to call the police and make a report. Crime is not getting reported and needs to be so the police can be aware.

Joy Scott is Heading up the National Night Out. There are MANY organizations coming: EMS, Our Fire station, D.A.R.E., Greensboro Police Dept, Sheriff BJ Barnes, Animal Control, and many more. There will be a live band. We need to have a Honor Table to feed all the volunteers who will be coming. We need families to help provide food. We also will need to put signs up to remind all our neighbors.

Kim Fuquay talked about getting yard signs to advertise the Neighborhood website. Ashley Fuquay called Sign A Rama and they said they would give us a 50% discount on the signs. The cost for 10 signs will be around $200. We need to collect money from our neighbors to help pay for these signs. Kim is asking for Street Captains to ask for a $1 donation for the signs when newsletters are distributed. If we get enough money we will also be able to get nice yard signs advertising the monthly meetings. Signs will be ordered as soon as the money is available.

Lee Wimbs spoke about the upcoming elections. The Ballot is on the website. There was a question by Mr. Mitchell about getting an absentee ballot. Joann/Lee will get anyone who needs an absentee ballot to them. Election will be Saturday July 28th from 10-12:30pm. There is space for write in nominations.

Joann talked about the Walk A Thon. WKZL will donate water bottles and T-Shirts if we can get 50+ people to walk. The walk will start at 9am Sept 8th. This is a charitable event for Murphy's Kids that will coincide with our Decorating contest. Monies will be given to Murphy's Kids to help send children in our area to Victory Junction Camp. There was discussion about the Decorating contest categories. We will do the same categories as last year and add Happy Hanukkah. It was suggested that we add a line stating "new category suggestion".

GHUC Meeting April 28, 2007

Meeting called to order at 10:10 am

General Meeting no agenda.

Joann stated that newsletters were printed by Glenn Bisbee. He had to pay out of his pocket to have them printed and Oakcrest Restaurant agreed to pay for 1/2 of the $400 if we put the Oakcrest flyer in the newsletter. We were short about 300 newsletters sorry that everyone didn't get one. It was also noted that the newsletters need to be folded by the street captains. Peggy Bruton has the newsletter software if anyone would like to help with the newsletter.

Joann wanted suggestions on how to get the attendance up at our meetings. Decided to alternate meeting dates and put signs out. Everyone was asked to bring a friend. Next meeting date was decided to be on Thurs May 24th. at the park for a picnic dinner 6:30pm. Mr. Webb suggested that we plan the meetings for the year and publish it so everyone knows and can plan.

Michelle Marine will now be getting the key for the Church and filling out the request form for our use of the Parkway Baptist Church.

We had samples of letterhead to look at for our neighborhood by the Stovall's and Kim Hastings.

Nikki Dodd spoke about the Neighborhood Watch and she needs the street captains to get her the info ASAP.

Next meeting we will vote on the BY-LAWS. After voting on the by-laws we can adopt the park and build the BBQ pit.

It was suggested that we have a sign at the park that dogs need to be on a leash. People need to pick up the poop from their dogs.

Phil asked about the girl who wrecked on Gracewood and Overbrook and Joann said she was doing good.

It was mentioned by several residents that there is a rodent issue in the neighborhood. We are going to request that all neighbors keep their lawns kept. Please, no things that harbor rodents such as old un-drivable cars, boats in your front or back yards. We also do not want items used to water these rodents left out in yards. Any concerns about this can be taken to Joann.

Yard Sale will be May 19th. Stephanie Phipps will be providing the signs. If you e-mailed them to the website please do it again or fill out the form and take it to Stephanie's House on Timber.
